World Run Day Founder: Bill McDermott
Recognized as the originator of the Virtual Run concept, Bill McDermott revolutionized the running community by founding World Run Day in 1999. His vision was to unite runners globally, celebrating the spirit of running for a cause, even for those unable to participate in local events. This groundbreaking idea introduced the concept of “Virtual Runners,” allowing people worldwide to join in from wherever they were. The concept was highlighted in a Newsday article by John Hanc. Bill was also a member of Running USA (RUSA) in 2009.
In its inaugural year, Bill achieved a major milestone by securing support from the legendary musician Sting, who endorsed the event as a platform for runners to donate to The Rainforest Foundation. In subsequent years, World Run Day became a dedicated effort to support the United Nations End Child Hunger Campaign, with Bill personally contributing all proceeds from event shirt sales to the cause.
One of the event’s unique aspects is encouraging runners to donate directly to their favorite charities, making it a global movement of generosity. The legacy of the event is captured in the Gallery webpage, showcasing an impressive collection of World Run Day t-shirts with inspiring messages from 1999 onward.
Despite personal and professional commitments, Bill ensured the continuity of World Run Day, even in years when time was scarce, often participating solo with his old running bib. Beyond World Run Day, Bill’s creativity shone through with the creation of additional virtual events in the early 2000s, including the Virtual Turkey Trot, Virtual Valentine’s Day Run, and more, bringing joy and purpose to runners worldwide.
Retired from a distinguished career as a Professionally Certified Project Manager (PMP) in New York City’s financial sector, Bill now channels his expertise into hosting World Run Day year after year. His contributions have left an indelible mark on the running community, inspiring countless individuals to run for a cause and make a difference.
